Four steps to maximizing restaurant operations

It’s a difficult time for restaurants facing Brexit. With a weaker pound and the possibility of manpower loss, the sector has been hit hard and faces a renewed challenge to stay sharp and productive.  So, what’s next?

Here are four ways in which management teams can reduce risk, boost productivity and improve revenue by streamlining their operations:

1: Get rid of paperwork

Paper-based systems aren’t just outdated, they’re time-consuming to complete, check and file. When you rely on other people to carry out essential tasks and record them for compliance purposes, there’s always uncertainty about what was done, by who, and when they did it.

So, the order of the day is to eliminate paper-based tasks and start working smarter. The benefits here are huge:

  • Cut out the looming threat of damage to your records.

2: Embrace technology

Having real-time control over your business operations, food service processes, health and safety, quality assurance, customer service, facilities, and maintenance is definitely going to save you a lot of time.

Those preparing their businesses for the exponential advancements brought about by technology will be fine, those who are not risk getting left behind.

Above all else, it pays to take the lead from those on the ground. Frontline staff and management teams are an invaluable source of local knowledge and insight into what works and what doesn’t work for each individual area. After all, in most cases these are the locals you’re trying to connect with.

Encourage ideas and honest feedback from your teams, and give them credit when you build their ideas into your strategy.

4: Do more with less

Driving revenue is a hard and highly competitive task, after all, who doesn’t want to make more money? To achieve this, you can take advantage of several strategies, like creating new products, upselling, opening new markets, or increasing your headcount.

But what you actually want is to be more efficient with less.

Think about whether your existing processes are making the best possible use of your staff’s time. Could some duties be combined or delegated from management teams to frontline staff (or vice versa)?

The bigger the chain of restaurant, the more time and resource you can save overall by making even tiny incremental gains where your staff’s daily routines are concerned.
